I am still recovering from sticker shock when my neighbor showed me some saddles they liked. The cheap saddles were around $1,500!!!!! I will be keeping an eye out for used saddles but would appreciate any info. or advice on some saddles not priced in the stratosphere. ;O) Being that most of the horses are not yet trained with a saddle yet, I would rather use a used or lower cost saddle for when they try to roll to get the saddle off or other antics. Will also be keeping an eye out for a training saddle for just this purpose.
| I bought a new Wintec a few years back for $200 new. I think they are normally around $450. They are synthetic and not a bad trail saddle where you might get it wet.

Eric, are these the same saddles that TSC is carrying? As I recall, the saddles I looked at in TSC were about $350 to $450. I'll have to go back and take another look.

I have not seen them at TSC. I bought mine at a tack shop. There are a number of e-sites carry them if you want a look. Attached is one that I have bought from before. They are over by Fayette AL in the Northport Co. They did carry Wintec any more, but have a local guy making some that compete in price. I liked the quality, initially (5 years ago) when they started and it wasn't bad, but I have not seen them recently, I am sure it is better. The early saddles I would rate, good materials not quite fit and finish of the $1000+. I stopped in last month but was looking for other tack.
Now looking for you I see they have a website.
I can do if you want but it might take a while before I am over that way unless I make a special trip for feed to the COOP. The local hardware store has been priced better recently.

If you're looking for used saddles and are planning a trip out West, go to Gallup, New Mexico. There is a pawn shop/retail store there that has about 60,000 square feet of floor space. They have several hundred used saddles as well as thousands of pieces of Indian Jewelry. Gallup may have a website that you can find the store online.

I'll over this suggestion... there's no such thing as a decent, affordable saddle so don't waste your time, or $$ looking! I've tried several of those "just as good as..." and "same quality as..." saddles and they aren't.
Cheap leather, poor workmanship, weak tooling, etc...
IMO, if you can't afford new, then buy a used saddle. Something from Circle Y, Textan, Billy Cook, Crates, Dakota are a few great names.
Personally, after riding Circle Y, I'm hooked. Good luck!
