 Economy Priced Pasture Fence

If there is such a thing. My neighbor is running short on pasture for their horses. I have a large amount of old cattle pasture that has set abandoned for a number of years that I have been working on cleaning up. The fences have seen better days but I was looking for some ideas on some effective low cost fencing to either repair the exhisting old fencing which I am leaning towards doing or am open to new ideas on other types of fencing. I realize the high tensile electric fence is ideal but that would just be prohibitively costly. I am just looking at potential possibilities to provide some wide open pasture for the horses to run in and at the same time they can help eat down some of the vegetative growth.

A horse is not the best animal to clean pastures as they are really selective in what they eat. My three keep only their few selected areas neat.
I true horse breader will shun barb wire and electric is a lot to maintain.
The nicest-cheapest fence I have seen is the material from ES Robbins. A large cattle operation in KY had its fencing in it and it looked superb from a distance. The pictures did not do it justice on the web, but I see they improved it since I talked with them.

What we found that works quite well is Centaur Poly plus with strands of white lightning on top and bottom. It can be installed on either posts or T posts. It's relatively easy to hang, the poly plus is a smooth poly cord, and the white lightning is the same only electrified. Cost is around $130 for 1300 feet, so is quite inexpensive.

Thanks for the info.! I sent off an information request to Centaur. When you say $130 for 1300 ft.; does this include ALL fence materials? I have a PHD and other fence driving/stretching equipment.

Randy, get few cattle, they'll keep the grass down better than a whole herd of horses, and they'll fill the 'toy fund' and freezer next fall.

All you need is a few step in posts, some electric fence strand and an energizer. Set up several pastures that you can rotate them between. If you put them in big fields they pick a small area and clean it right to dirt. Keep them down to a few acres per animal and move them when it looks chewed down a bit.

Best of luck.

I agree with Murf, except I might look at goats as cows can be somewhat selective too. You can actually make more money with goats in Nashville with the Mexican pop.
I think we talked about this before you stick the goats in a very confined area with multiple strands of electic fence for a while then remove them and set temp poles with a single strand where you need them to eat. Just move you enclosure to the worst area as needed.
