What kind of trailer to buy?

I am getting ready to buy a 14' utility trailer to haul my NH TC24D on. I would also like to use it on occasion to haul a yard or two of gravel or sand. Have been looking at a heavy duty land scaping trailer or a flat bed with rails. Any suggestions on what to buy or how to unload sand or gravel from whatever I buy. I have a artificial shoulder joint so I am not much in to shoveling.

Tandem axle with brakes on both axles minimum. Try a tilt bed for the hauling. Make sure the trailer has enough GVW for your tractor, fuel, oil, FEL, Backhoe(?), and what ever tools you are going to haul.

What are you going to tow this with? Does it have enough GCVW? 1/2 ton trucks and SUV's need not apply for this rig.

Will just be hauling tractor with FEL, together will weigh 3500 to 4000 lbs. If hauling gravel, will probably be around 5000 lbs max. Looking at tandom axle, 7000 GVWR with brakes on both axles. Will be towing with Toyota Tundra which tows 7200lbs. Towing distance, 20 miles max.

Take a peek at bri-mar.com. They make a low profile tandem dump trailer with low sides that also has ramps for loading your tractor. They also show a tilt bed trailer. I don't feel that a tilt bed will raise enough to drop sand or stone without help. I'd go with the dump trailer. Believe Rascal and others do the same thing. Also checkout forestriver.com They make everything under lots of different brand names.

The only thing I would question is the 14 foot bed length. A 16 footer would allow more room to position the tractor for optimum tongue weight.

BTW, the Tundra will pull the proposed load with ease.

I agree with the above comments.

The longer trailer will allow for a better balanced load. The tundra is certainly able to pull that much weight, but carrying it is another matter. If the trailer is too short it may result in too much tongue weight on the back of that Toyota.

Even a short drive with a poorly distributed load can be a real white-knuckle experience.

Best of luck.

My only comment about the 14' trailer is that many more 16' trailers are sold than 14'. If you ever wanted to sell it the 16' should have the better resale ease and value of the two. This may be, however, more of an issue with the utility trailer than the dump.

I totally agree on the 16 footer concept, we have booth a 14 and a 16 footer at our landscape outfit, and it always seems a little bigger is better. If you're looking for a brand that holds up fairly well but is fairly cheap at the same time, big tex is excellent for the price, please note there are better ones for more money...

The Bri-mar "dump trailers" sold here in SE Michigan are known for not being able to lift from a dead-level start even though they have two cylinders. My 5-yd cap. was made in Canada, very heavy duty (12,500 GVW). I used it to haul my old 9N around then later my TC33D which is roughly the same size. (For grins and giggles--believe it or not the TC33D can actually pull the dump trailer fully-loaded with clay fill at top speed--kids don't try this at home). For ramps I used 9' sections of a new mobile home tongue I-beam---reinforced of course.
