Subsoiler in pasture
That sounds like the best recommendation, Bob. And in my prior post, I mentioned the subsoiler being 2" wide, and I don't think they are actually quite that wide. Michigander, the neighbor who uses a chisel plow on pastures does make a cross pattern. And Roger, re: "the 4" double plow point one a spring tooth". That sounds like what I always just called a "field sweep" and see that the Tractor Supply Co. catalog calls some of them "field cultivator sweeps" and some "row crop sweeps", and I'm using 6" ones instead of 4".

Subsoiler in pasture
If the ground has been left on it's own for years and heavy veichles have not been going across than nature normally takes care of itself and the roots from the plants will permeate the hardpan from years past. You might try a Aerway machine for your application. They are built for pasture areation and they do build several models some that would also with adjustments be suitable for lawns. They are not a coreing machine but cut with a knife type blade and would work excellent for your application of fertilizers.

I don't know what it would take to pull it, but the pasture renovator made by Monroe tufline looks like it would really work well. Maybe a narrow width model could be pulled by a 40 HP tractor.

Michigander, would also like to mention that besides the wealth of farming and conservation information that resides at your local NRCS/SCD office, chances are one of the SCD's board members lives near your farm. They often know who has pasture renovators in your neighborhood or can lead you to someone nearby who has similar equipment to get the job done that you want. Also, they usually can lead you to someone in your locale who has recently done the kind of (pasture) work you are desiring to do, and a phone call or two and a visit to that farm will get you set up with all of the information you need to do the job. Most importantly, when you visit that farm with similar field conditions as your farm, you get to see their results and how they came to be and can assess if that's what you want for your place.
