Who are the Top 10 CUT Manufacturers?

It’s hard to tell from online marketing information who is driving the compact utility tractor (CUT) market. It seems that Japan, Korea and China may be the home countries for the CUT’s we call Deere, AGCO, CNH and so on. With the exception of New Holland’s Dublin, GA plant it looks like the CUT market is dominated by overseas manufacturers.

Based on TractorPoints listing of manufacturers (Deere, Kubota and New Holland) and other brands (Belarus, Hinomoto, Kioti, Mitsubishi, Shibaura, Yanmar, Long, MF, Ventrac and Cub Cadet); are these the top manufacturers? Does anyone know of a site on the internet that tracks CUT sales in the US?

There are several manufacturers that claim to be leading the market. Who is really manufacturing and selling the most CUT’s to the North American market? TractorPoint might be the logical place to track this info for its readers.

Who are the Top 10 CUT Manufacturers?

SE lou,
I would like to know as well, but have not been able to find any sales figures anywhere. Maybe that is because the manufacturers/importers don't want the truth known, so they can claim what they wantSmile
It might effect stock prices negatively on some of the companies if it were published that their sales were dropping.
I suppose you could find out the $sales figures off of the stockholders information that is published, but I doubt if that would contain the number of units sold.

Kubota,JD,NH and the rest are all to close to tell at any given moment. With top three holding about 80% and Kubota over 35%.

From talking to dealers, it's my understanding that Kubota has the lion's share of the CUT market. Followed by Deere, NH, Massey and Cub a distant 5th. That's of the five known traditional brands. Kioti is allegedly nip and tuck with NH in the compact market even with their spotty dealer network. As for the others, they probably have local hotspots based on location of dealers. I would GUESS the rest of them combined sell about that Kioti or NH sell.

*** This is only conjecture/educated guess on my part. Based soley on dealer conversations. I have nothing in print to back this up. I, like SE lou, would love to see some figures.

New Holland is the same as John Deere with cut's. The Dublin plant here is only assembling the tractors. When they do this, all that has to be done is sometimes to fix the sheet metal and put the tires on. It still is from Shibaura. John Deere is still Yanmar.

Ya'll might be suprised to find that the actual numbers of tractors sold in the US is around 130k mark. This includes most CUT's and all larger tractors. Last year, Mahindra sold 5000 of them. So did Long. Belarus was around 5000 -7000 before recent troubles. There are currently around 40-50 tractor lines selling in the US right now. One point of interest, The gray market tractors cannot be tracked in this manner. I would say that at least 20k or so (according to my experience with various dealers) are sold. It is not umcommon for a dealer to sell over 100 tractors this way per year.

Who are the Top 10 CUT Manufacturers?

Thanks for your thoughts. I did find a site for the Association of Equipment Manufacturers that did list tractors by horsepower: below 40hp, 40-100hp, and above 100hp. They present statistics for 2001, 2002 and projections for 2003. During 2002, the 39 manufacturers reporting claimed to have produced about 170,000 tractors, of which 95,000 were in the below 40hp category (about the size of a CUT, and subCUT/SCUT?). Many of the international manufacturers were not included in the pole. The site is at AEM dot org slash Trends slash IndusOut slash PDF slash soi-0207 dot pdf.

Based on the very informal inputs from this forum it looks like Kubota may have sold about 30,000 CUTs, Yanmar(Deere) 15,000 CUTs, Shibaura(NH) 15,000 CUTs, Daedong(Kioti) 12,000 CUTs, Mitsubishi(Case & Cub Cadet) 8,000 CUTs, Iseki & Hinomoto(MF) 7,000 CUTs, and Mahindra/Daedong(Mahindra) 5,000 CUTs, Long 5,000 CUT’s, and Belarus 3,000 CUTs, for a total of about 100,000 units. Then you toss in the Gray Market, the Chinese box tractors and other smaller importers, which may have sold 15-25,000 more CUTs & SCUTs. Whew!! Gives international tractors a whole new meaning!

Let’s keep looking for the real numbers. I just looked at the Deere 2002 annual report online, no unit numbers, just $ profit and loss.

Under 40HP CUT Market

1.Kubota over 50%
2/3. John Deere and New Holland ~15% each

Everyone else.

Kubota makes their own complete tractors, John Deere gets it's important parts from Yanmar, New Holland (Owned by Fiat) gets it's important parts from Shibura.

It is hard to find any specific numbers, but it is generally accepted that kubota has a commanding lead in this market and has been there a long time. At one point I believe they were up to 66% of the under 40HP CUT market, which I've seen in other posts, what defines a Compact Utility Tractor is difficult too.

Hard to say what the future holds though. JD made $319 Million last year, but lost $320 million the year before. FIAT (NH) is in major financial trouble and the Japanese economy has been bad for awhile now.

I thought Kubota imported parts and anssembled their tractors in GA or somewhere like that. It must cut some import taxes/tariffs for them.
