Its growing, now what...
OK, the pasture is growing, and its too early/rich to let the horses out on it full time yet. I've seen some articles that say I should routinely cut the pasture to help maintain it, keep down weeds, etc. The question is, how long do I let it get. (I hate cutting down food that i think they should eat). Do I pick a height, or do I just make sure the grasses, alfalfa, and weeds don't head up and seed ? ANY SUGGESTIONS ?

we are going through the same thing right now.
i was told for first year pastures(ours is)its good to
let it go to seed and then mow it about 8 inches high.
i was worried that the cuttings would smother out the
grass but they said that should'nt happen if you have a good cutter and dont go too fast while your cutting.

Spent a couple hours pulling wild mustard yesterday - I've heard my in-laws story of pulling out a 40 ac field by hand too many times to get away w/ doing any less on my little plot.
8" huh...one more reason for me to get my tractor bought - my Massey MMM goes up about that much, but only if I pull it up to transport.
I just got handed another article on pastures, and once again they say I should cut it. I have always mowed the front pasture, and although it does get cropped down more, it is thicker and healthier than the back pasture - so it does work.
Was hoping for moral support on NOT having to mow - the back pasture is a pain.

Horses are pretty selective eaters. I have 13 acres fenced and keep my three hay burners in it all year. They will eat hay in the winter and will clip most of the grass down but in spring and summer in the pasture they tend to clip certain areas to the nuff and leave the rest long. They prefer the fresh grass rather than the older material.
I am on my third cutting this spring, what is with you guys?

Most livestock are pretty selective when given a choice. I always mow the pastures here. I'm in the same boat as Peters, mowing starts here about mid March to first of April.
